`Troops Out` picket of BBC, Queen Margaret Drive, Glasgow. Monday 29 November.
01 Dec 2004
302086.jpgGlasgow based `Troops Out` held a three-hour picket outside the offices of BBC Scotland in Queen Margaret Drive, Glasgow. The BBC, cowed by the Hutton report, has represented the disaster of Fallujah as something that has just happened, rather than highlighting the war crimes that have taken place. The cutting off of electricity and water from a whole population is a collective punishment, which is a war crime under the Geneva Convention. The use of indiscriminate firepower as from AC130 gun ships and the dropping of 500kg bombs is excessive force, which is also a violation of the Geneva Convention. There is no sense of outrage in the reporting about the humanitarian disaster, which has taken place.

eden_waste_protest02_small.jpgVillagers stage noisy protest at country's biggest waste exhibition.

Frustrated at being targeted for yet another waste dump residents of Greengairs and neighbouring villages today (Wednesday 27 October) took their protest to the country's biggest trade exhibition and conference for companies dealing in waste.

Half a dozen whistle-blowing, bin bag wielding, villagers staged a sit down protest and occupation of Eden Waste's corporate stand at today's Wastex event in Edinburgh. Other protests wearing t-shirts with slogans such as
'Eden Waste: don't dump on us', 'Eden Waste: don't dump on Greengairs' handed out leaflets to those attending the exhibition.

Anti GM Activists Win Court Battle
25 Oct 2004
GMwinteryurt.jpgFOUR GM crop protesters convicted of aggravated trespass for their part in a protest at Munlochy on the Black Isle in August 2001 won their appeal at the High Court in Edinburgh on 7th October 2004.

The genetically modified crop trials at Munlochy were the target of a sustained, well-supported and ultimately successful campaign of resistance. This included direct actions when people decontaminated fields by uprooting the GM plants. The authorities eventually abandoned plans for a further GM trial in the Scottish Highlands.

Housing Benefit Disgrace
08 Oct 2004

Shocking delays in the payment of Housing Benefit in Scotland are revealed by new government figures. Claimants making a new claim face an average wait of 80 days in East Dunbartonshire, 79 days in Dundee, 78 days in Edinburgh, with long delays in other areas too. This causes hardship, stress and sometimes even eviction.

"This is unacceptable. Councils have a legal duty to pay Housing Benefit two weeks after receiving the information they need from the claimant. Let's insist on this right and force Councils to pay up on time," say Edinburgh Claimants.
