Around 7:00 pm this evening (Fri. 12/10 - International Human Rights Day) between 17-18 people were arrested for "criminal trespass" while occupying the hallway outside the office of Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. The mayor was not there, nor did he ever have a conversation with those who had come to raise the issue at his office. |

As Global Warming Threat Grows, Individuals Can Make A Difference
by Preserve Our Climate Coalition*
We are concerned the Bush administration has been ignoring sound science in deciding not to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and other sources.
The recently released Arctic Climate Impact Assessment concluded that there is indeed a very real threat of more rapid global warming in the coming decades, due mainly to the buildup of billions of tons of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The Bush administration rejected the Kyoto Protocol, which would have required the United States to reduce by 2008 our annual greenhouse gas emissions to levels 7 percent below our 1990 emissions. |

Mel & Floyd, December 3, 2004
by Sarah Turner
Whew! After a Thanksgiving hiatus (sorry about that) and massive Internet problems, I've managed - once again - to post Madison's favorite comedy duo, the tag-team Mel & Mr. Pants, here on Madison Indymedia. Many mindless minions died to bring you this week's episode, but as you'll see, the ends justify the means.
Apologies for the late start - everybody has to do their laundry. The show begins one minute in, approximately, with Mel & Mr. Pants giggling over something involving a meteorite. Weird.

Nablus, Palestine shows solidarity with the people of Fallujah by spelling out 'Al-Falujah' in flames on the mountain above the city.
Local Palestinians and international activists (including one Madisonite) 'Al-Fallujah' was spelt out in Arabic using sand on a steep hillside above Nablus. |

ABC's 20/20 Got it Wrong in Matthew Shepard Piece
by John L. Quinlan
A critique of the Friday, Nov. 26th episode of the ABC News show, 20/20, which claims that its story demonstrates that the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming was not a homophobia-based hate crime. The author bases his comments on a preview copy of the show he viewed in conjunction with an interview in Wednesday's WI State Journal. Note: He will be the guest on Madison talk radio station WXXM 92.1 at 5:15 pm on Friday, Nov. 26th, and will be part of a story airing on WKOW-TV's 10pm news that night. |

Dear Red State Cousin - Keep Your God Off My Country, Body and Earth
by Dr. Glen Barry
Earth Meanders
The following essay is a response to the recent American Presidential election, in which differences in moral values between the liberal "blue states" and conservative "red states" were widely perceived as decisive. I argue below in a letter to my "red state cousin" that environmental conservation is the ultimate moral issue, and insist that born again Christians keep their God off my country, body and Earth. |

Bigots clobbered by jubilant horde of Madisonians!
by Grey Owl
On Thursday this week, local newspapers and news websites proclaimed Fred Phelps's imminent arrival in Madison. Phelps, a fervently homophobic right-wing "Christian Reverend," is notorious around the country for his sickeningly bigoted godhatesfags.com web site and for his pickets at various pro-queer (or even vaguely queer-related) events around the country. Phelps and his Kansas-based Westboro Baptist congregation make it their crusade to protest all forms of queer activism in the nation. |

Mel & Floyd, November 19, 2004
by Sarah Turner
This week's edition of Mel & Floyd features cross-dressing teens; a national lard shortage; John Ashcroft's successor, Torture Boy Gonzales; the Teamsters' pension fund run into the ground by "officials"'; US policy in Iraq: "the beatings will continue until morale improves"; species extinction; and so much more. No monkey news this week, though there is a strange "time warp" and a bit of static towards the beginning of the show. (Sorry for that - the signal clears up shortly, and the show continues uniterrupted.)
Listen to Mel & Floyd from 1:00pm - 2:00pm every Friday on 89.9 FM, Madison's only community radio station, WORT.

Bush Administration Shuns Latest Global Warming Studies
by Michael T. Neuman
"This study is the smoking gun. Skeptics, polluting industries and President Bush can't run away from this one," said Philip E. Clapp, president, National Environmental Trust (NET), in assessing the results of the latest global warming impact study: the "Arctic Climate Impact Assessment" report.
"The President can't hide behind scientific uncertainty after this report. This is going to require a reassessment of the Administration's global warming policy. It is a top issue for our European allies, and if he wants any level of increased cooperation in Iraq, they are going to want him to give on this one," Mr. Clapp said.
Yet President George W. Bush continues to stand by his rejection of the Kyoto Treaty, as is holding fast to his rejection of mandatory curbs on greenhouse gases that are blamed for global warming, the president's advisors claim. |
