Lawsuit Challenges Stop-Loss Policy |

Lawyers representing US soldiers in Iraq and Kuwait filed a class-action lawsuit today to challenge the military's "stop-loss orders." Under stop-loss, members of the armed forces whose terms end or who retire can be forced to remain on active duty for an indefinite amount of time. A related policy allows recently discharged soldiers to be called back to duty.

On Friday, December 3, UE 160 members and organizers spoke with twelve workers, eight students, and a handful of faculty members of the University of Mary Washington Living Wage Coalition. They met at the university's physical plant in Fredericksburg, VA to explore the question, “Can state workers unionize?” The answer was a resounding “Yes you can!” |

The historic Watergate Complex in Washington, DC, is also the reputed hideout of Dow Chemical Board member and criminal accomplice Barbara Franklin, and it's here that the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal chose to mark the 20th anniversary of the chemical gas disaster at Bhopal, India, the worst industrial accident in history, in which nearly 20,000 people died at the hands of the Union Carbide Corporation. Dow Chemical purchased Union Carbide four years ago, but to this day refuses to assume responsibility for the cleanup of the Bhopal accident site, or compensation for the victims. |

Urge Support for DC menu labeling bill |

If you are a DC resident or have friends or family who live in DC, action is needed today to help pass DC’s menu labeling bill. The Nutritional Information at Restaurants Act, B15-0387, would require fast-food and other chain restaurants to provide calorie labeling on menu boards and calorie, saturated plus trans fat, carbohydrate, and sodium labeling on printed menus. The Council is expected to vote on the bill soon, so your action is needed now.
