Planets Align for CTA Efforts: Fare Strike, "Free Ride" Day, Delay of Funding Cuts |
by Chicago IMC |
15 Dec 2004
|
December 15, 2004 brought a rousing trifecta of events around the Chicago Transit Authority.
First, a city-wide farestrike was called to protest the CTA's misallocation of funds and a consequent threat of $55 million in budget cuts.
Then, a post to Chicago Indymedia's newswire and a parallel round of emails to corporate media outlets, ostensibly from the CTA, announced a day of free transit on December 15. The CTA has declared that the fare strike announcement was a hoax and groups calling for the fare strike have denied any involvement in the CTA 'announcement'. CTA officials have told the Chicago Tribune that they have called in the FBI to investigate the matter. At the same time, community reports suggest that many CTA workers supported today's fare strike. Read More: First Day Of Fare Strike Descends On Chicago
Finally, reports from Springfield indicate that the CTA will delay funding cuts for six months until such time as the Illinois General Assembly can act to restore funding cuts -- a development that, if true, supports activists' contention that CTA threats to cut services and jobs were in fact an unnecessary attempt to strongarm state legislators for more funding.

Chicago Indymedia Website Update |
by CIMC |
06 Dec 2004
|
As many know, Chicago Indymedia is working on restoring full site functionality after a catastropic server crash on November 17. Happily, a couple of additional issues have been resolved recently.
MEDIA UPLOADS: As of Monday, December 6, we have FIXED the 'upload media' section, so start slapping your photos/graphics/flyers/etc. up on the site.
CALENDAR/RAZORWIRE: As of Monday, December 6, we have FIXED the razorwire feature, meaning we can now centerpanel calendar listings and notices again, so slap up those urgent calls to action.
SITE SPEED/DATABASE ISSUES: We know the site is slow, and much of our media uploads remain hosed. We continue to work on this stuff. Thanks for your patience, and don't hesitate to rally in with questions, comments, and great thoughts here. |

Chicago Indymedia Back Up After Two-Week Hiatus! |
by Chicago Indymedia |
01 Dec 2004
|
On November 17, 2004, the web server that hosts Chicago Indymedia and roughly seven other Indymedia sites failed. The technical failure was severe, and the disks are not yet fully recovered.
Happily, as of today, December 1, we're back online on a new server after much heroic effort from our local and global Indymedia volunteer techs. Much of the delay in getting back online was caused by difficulties in
recovering media files, and while our techs are still working to restore as many of these files as possible, some stories and photos may be permanently hosed, and the site may run slow for a while. Dammit.
We deeply regret any inconvenience this may have caused our many users, supporters and contributors, and are grateful to you all for your support and concern. We value the contributions of all of you -- you're the backbone of Indymedia -- and want everyone to have the opportunity to read and see your content. So if stuff you posted is missing -- especially photos -- please feel free to repost them to the media gallery via the hotkey 'upload media.' Thanks for bearing with us through this trying time, as we continue to work out the kinks on our new server.

Iraq Vets Opposing the War: Veteran's Day in Chicago |
by Jessica Pupovac, CIMC |
12 Nov 2004
|
This morning in downtown Chicago, Vietnam Vets Against the War held their annual Veteran’s Day rally, drawing a crowd of about seventy five Vets, along with their family members and supporters. They have gathered on Veteran’s Day for over thirty years now to honor vets by standing up for their rights, denouncing their being sent into unjust wars and calling for the US to put it’s money where it’s mouth is and “support our troops.” However, this year differed from those that came before it in one very significant aspect: taking the podium was a newcomer, representing a generation of Veterans just recently finding their voice and their place in the anti-war movement. This year‘s rally included a veteran back from Iraq, expressing strong opposition to the occupation. Read More | Photos: [ 1 | 2 | Ashes for a War Memorial ]
