Buy Nothing Campaign: Phase One
Trevor Hagstrom, 27.11.2004 - 14:42Ashland protesters hit the rogue valley mall and were swiftly stiffled, but this is just the beginning.
November 26th, the day after Thanksgiving has become a disgusting American tradition, revolving around materialism and leftovers.
Adbusters has ran a campaign called Buy Nothing Day on this faux holiday for 5 years now, but most people don't know it exists. In order to spread the word an impromptu protest was launched at the Rogue Valley Mall in Medford, ground zero for corporate Christmas

Butler Ford: International Day of Protest!
Trevor Hagstrom, 18.11.2004 - 22:49SOU Students go and ticket Butler Ford for enviro violations
Minimalism and Protesting: A handfull of Southern Students take on Butler
I was part of a small protest at Butler Ford on November, 18th. The protest was called in honor of "The International day of protest against Ford". Only 6 people in Ashland got the memo, but our will was strong. We stood in front of Butler with signs and ticketed the SUV's in the front row of the lot with mock citations with facts about our oil consumption. Soon we were outnumbered by bored Butler employees who had dealt with our kind before. They all had nicely pressed matching shirts and wore the equivalent of an entire tube of hair gel collectively.
Soon a battle of wits ensued, they were friendly, and so were we. They claimed our action was honorable, but misguided. First they attempted to expose us as hypocrites. They asked us what we drove, we responded truthfully, we all didn't own cars and relied on mass transit, with the exception of a Volkswagen owner who runs his car on vegetable oil. They claimed that Ford was a friend to the environment, and the cleanest car company and we should go protest one of their competitors. They had some interesting facts to support this claim.

What Now? Our Community Responds to the 2004 Election
imc volunteer, 06.11.2004 - 12:15George W. Bush was re sElected president of the United States of America on November 2nd, amid widespread voter disenfranchisement, and concerns about electronic voting systems. Across the nation people took to the streets in protest. In Columbus Ohio, people stormed the statehouse, in San Fransisco, 5,000 people took to the streets, in DC a hundred people had a snake march through downtown, and in Portland police used pepper spray on the more than one thousand people who took to the streets. People protested in dozens of other American cities.
Locally, over 50 people gathered in Ashland on November 3 to discuss the implications of the 2004 election and to plan future events.
A series of events is planned for next week to further discuss and strategize our community's response to the events of this week. Read on to see what is happening in our community...
