WEST PAPUA Dec 3 2004
Morning Star West Papuan Independence Day

VIOLENCE has flared in the capital of Indonesia's troubled province of West Papua as security forces moved to break up a flag-raising ceremony by independence supporters, a Sydney-based human rights monitor said today." (AAP report)

At the same time, the ALP and the Liberals both voted against a Senate motion by the Greens to urge the Indonesian Government to allow West Papuans to have their Morning Star flag of freedom permitted.

In Sydney an information stall was in operation at a Bondi displaying the Morning Star flag in a prominent position and encouraging people to write to the Australian Foreign Affairs department regarding the present military operation in the highlands.

In Wellington New Zealand, around people gathered at parliament on December 1st in solidarity with the people of West Papua and their struggle for self-determination. 1st December 2004 marks the forty-third anniversary of the West Papuan Declaration of Independence from Dutch colonial rule. Protesters raised the 'Morning Star' in front of the Beehive.

In the United Kingdom a candle-lit silent vigil was held outside the London Indonesian Embassy, in solidarity with the 15,000 Papuan brothers and sisters who are suffering and dieing on the mountainside of Puncak Jaya.

COMMUNITY RADIO Dec 2 2004
2SER 2SER Management agrees to talk

Regular imc readers would recall that in October 2SER sacked five paid staff and announced massive changes to programming.

Since then the Station Manager Philip Shine has taken the arrogant stance that the changes are not negotiable. He claimed his stupid plan for the station was THE ONLY plan and that the 300 volunteers could not have a say! His misguided ideas included chopping talks shows by half and targeting a much older age group of listeners. (a kneejerk reaction to FBi). He also decided to cut all live programming from the Macquarie University studio! (and broadcast only from uts). He also wants to go off air for 8 weeks in January-February.

Well now it seems Shine has been over-ruled by his boss, Prof Richard Johnstone, who has told the volunteers reps that there will be two weeks of consultation on the plan. Of course it remains to be seen if the consultation is genuine???

Zanny's stencils Censorship in Blacktown: artist silenced for anti-war message

In Sydney's West it's hard enough to get some issues noted or debated, but I think we have found the perfect answer to get noticed: Get the MAYOR to personally intervene, call police and BAN your art project. This is what has just happened in Blacktown...

INDYMEDIA Nov 25 2004
Hey! You! Come Along! Five year anniversary of Indymedia! Film Nite

Sydney IMC in association with :: the screening room:: (a brand spanking new independent artists gallery + cinema space) Presents 5 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF INDYMEDIA :: 5 years since Seattle::

On November 30 1999 the streets of Seattle errupted in the first protests of what would become a global anti-capitalist movement against undemocratic institutions such as the World Trade Organisation. The belief that the mainstream media were never going to honestly and intelligently report on the downside of globalization, and the story of the various groups trying to fight it, encouraged the collaboration of communities to not just hate the media, but TO BECOME THE MEDIA.

Using an opensource code designed by Sydney based geek collective CAT (http://www.cat.org.au/), protesters on the streets were able to post eyewitness accounts and publish articles and photographs from any computer to the rest of the world. Since then IMCs have sprung up worldwide on 6 continents, in over 150 cities in over 5 different languages!

To help celebrate this and the launch of Oceania newsreel, a compilation of video activist media short pieces from our region, Sydney IMC and the screening room invite you to an evening of films

2SER 2SER to sack staff, change station focus

From the newswire: The management of Sydney community radio station 2SER-FM (107.3 FM) is planning to change the broadcasters format without any consultation with volunteers or staff. In late October the station announced that five staff would be sacked and a brand new format, based on an older demographic would be introduced next year.

The decision came as a complete shock to the stations 12 paid staff and 300-odd volunteers. There was no warning at all that the financial situation was so bad. The sackings and the major program changes were dumped on station employees and volunteers who were given no say in the decision-making process.

Station Manager Philip Shine's plan, which includes cutting local talk shows by 50%, has the backing of the stations Board of Directors, which is dominated by senior university executives. (2SER is owned by UTS and Macquarie uni's)

But volunteers, who produce and present programmes 24 hours a day, say the decision has no legitimacy, because they were not warned or consulted, and their single position on the board was vacant at the time of the decision.

REMEMBRANCE DAY Nov 12 2004
March Past Town Hall Stop the War in Falluja

The Stop The War Coalition organised a Remembrance Day rally to protest the destruction of Falluja. About 100 people turned up before the rain started and marched down to Martin Place after observing a short silence for all the victims of war over the years.

U.S. forces have been busy with their ground assault on the Iraqi city of Fallujah, long denigrated by Bush and his cronies for harbouring so-called insurgents. But for many Iraqi people, Fallujah represents a bastion of resistance against a foreign aggressor which has no right being in the country at all and certainly not the right to destroy lives and property with impunity.

Stop the War Coalition held a rally on Thursday afternoon November 11, at Sydney Town Hall to protest this new round of slaughter and destruction in Fallujah. At around 6pm the march headed towards to the US Consulate in Martin Place to let them know what many Australians think of the illegal invasion.
