Busy Thanksgiving Weekend for NYC Activists
28 Nov 2004
BND004.jpgLocal activists stayed busy over the holidays even when they weren't being hounded by NYPD bike police. On Thursday, a busload of New Yorkers seeking to remind their fellow Americans of the real story about Thanksgiving traveled to Plymouth, Massachusetts for the 35th annual National Day of Mourning, which was led by the United American Indians of New England. On Friday, Rev. Billy & Co. celebrated Buy Nothing Day by giving away free gifts and raising a ruckus in Midtown.

New York City 'Declares War' On Cyclists
27 Nov 2004
police-1.jpgAccording to reports from the street, a vertiable army greeted last nights Critical Mass bike ride in Union Square. "On Friday November 27th, the NYPD had over 50 police vans, 40 scooters, 6oo bike cops, dozens of police cars, 20 flatbed trucks, 7 mobile police station and camera vans, and two helicopters" in Union Square.

One reader writes: "The criminalization of cycling continues in NYC. Critical Mass was rendered ineffectual tonight by unlawful NYPD scare tactics. Loudspeakers greeted cyclists at Union Square warning any who choose to ride would be arrested despite a Federal court ruling allowing Critical Mass to go ahead. The orange nets, hundreds of NYPD on foot, scooters and bikes were deployed at huge expense to thwart this new pedal powered threat to our city." [Read More]

Documents Show Pier 57 Contained Asbestos, Lead, and Fire Hazards; HPRT Aware of Problems
26 Nov 2004
Modified: 11:05:21 PM
161_6137_r1.jpgJust months before the New York City Police Department detained protestors at Pier 57 during the Republican National Convention, the Hudson River Park Trust (HRPT) -- controlling authority over the Chelsea Piers and Pier 57 -- received detailed reports warning of contamination including asbestos and lead, as well as a separate study warning of fire hazards and multiple violations of building and fire codes, according to documents now in this author‘s possession. These reports were commissioned by the HRPT several months prior to the presentation of findings, in anticipation of development of Pier 57.

Documents Show Pier 57 Violated Written Agreement; Questions Remain About C.O.
26 Nov 2004
pier57.jpgDocuments obtained by this author show that the New York City Police Department used Pier 57 as the primary point of processing and detention of arrestees during the Republican National Convention, despite the fact that the written agreement between the NYPD and the Hudson River Park Trust (HRPT) -- controlling authority over the Chelsea Piers and Pier 57 -- allowed for the pier’s use only as a secondary facility for these purposes. The utilization of the pier on one certain date also seems to have violated the written agreement. At this time, it seems that use of the pier may have taken place without the issuance of any Certificate of Occupancy from the New York City Department of Buildings, which appears to be in violation of city regulations, according to knowledgeable sources connected to this story.

Thanksgiving Day Events Across the Region
24 Nov 2004
thanksgiving.jpgActivists will be marking the Thanksgiving holiday in various ways across the New York City region. In Park Slope, the Brooklyn Greens will be sponsoring a Thanksgiving Day Fast outside Sen. Charles Schumer's house. 12 noon - 9 pm, 9 Prospect Park West (corner of Carroll St.)

Also on Thanksgiving Day will be the 35th National Day of Mourning, with United American Indians of New England (UAINE) in Plymouth, Mass, from 12:00 PM - 7:00 PM.

On Buy Nothing Day, activism heats up in New York City. Rev. Bill and Johnny America are calling on protesters to "reimagine Buy Nothing Day." "See history in the making as the good Reverend nails his Nine Theses (Martin-Luther-style) to the doors of St. McDonald's Cathedral of Perpetual Consumption," they write. Other activists are targeting Wal Mart. And both The Gap and Starbucks were nice enough to post Buy Nothing Day coupons to our open newswire.

City tries to close down S. Bronx Community Center; Court Hearing Tomorrow
17 Nov 2004
img_1784.jpgThere will be a rally in support of Casa del Sol community center 9 a.m. Thursday in front of the Bronx County Courthouse at 161st and Grand Concourse.

The occupants of Casa del Sol, located at 136th and Cypress in the South Bronx, will be in court to fight the city’s bid to eject them. The city states that it wants to convert an “abandoned” building into housing, although the building is already in use. Supporters of Casa del Sol say they will engage in non-violent civil disobedience if the court rules against them. Projects at Casa Del Sol currently include a Silkscreen Shop, Community Garden, an After School Program, the Adverse Possession Art Gallery and weekly concerts. Casa Del Sol also hosts an Annual Street Fair and Halloween Party, and houses the offices of the Cherry Tree Association and the Mutual Aid Project, which produces the New York City Free Events Calendar. The showdown over the future of Casa del Sol comes at a time when the city is also on the verge of bulldozing four community gardens in Melrose, another South Bronx neighborhood experiencing increased gentrification.

1_fence.jpgClose Associates Of President Bush Connected To Pier Utilization Also Seek Development Deal At Pier

Rumors have persisted concerning the relationship between the 2004 Republican National Convention and the now-infamous Pier 57 in New York City. Speculation has focused on whether or not the Republican National Committee obtained some form of lease agreement for the pier, which was used by the New York City Police Department as a holding facility for protestors arrested during the convention.
