Documents Show Use of Pier 57 Violated Written Agreement; Questions Remain Concerning Certificate of Occupancy |
by Drew Poe

Documents obtained by this author show that the New York City Police Department used Pier 57 as the primary point of processing and detention of arrestees during the Republican National Convention, despite the fact that the written agreement between the NYPD and the Hudson River Park Trust (HRPT) -- controlling authority over the Chelsea Piers and Pier 57 -- allowed for the pier’s use only as a secondary facility for these purposes. The utilization of the pier on one certain date also seems to have violated the written agreement. At this time, it seems that use of the pier may have taken place without the issuance of any Certificate of Occupancy from the New York City Department of Buildings, which appears to be in violation of city regulations, according to knowledgeable sources connected to this story.
DOCUMENTS SHOW PIER 57 CONTAINED ASBESTOS, LEAD CONTAMINATION AND FIRE HAZARDS; HRPT AWARE OF CONTAMINATION PRIOR TO USE OF PIER TO DETAIN PROTESTORS |

On Thursday, November 25, a group of advocates for the homeless began occupying a former homeless center at 75 I St, SW, Washington, DC. Both the Gales School Shelter and the Randall School Shelter have recently been closed seemingly as a part of the city administration's efforts to make the homeless invisible by sweeping them out of the downtown area.

I'm sure that there's a lot of folks out there who earn their living as journalists and by studying the political process who are way ahead of me on this, but I still feel compelled to ask: were the Democrats taking a dive in this last election? Yeah, I know I'm probably way wrong on this, but the question keeps nagging at me. |

Body parts litter Falluja and US dinner tables. Complacent Christians gorge themselves without fear, safe from the threat of gay marriage. Thus, the conquest continues. But resistance is persistent. Separation is both cause and consequence of our problems. Solidarity -- with the earth, other animals, each other, and ourselves -- will save us. |

Saturday almost a hundred immigrant day laborers and their supporters marched and rallied in Woodbridge Virginia, protesting recent police harassment and arrests of their community. Following the passage of the new bill HB 570 in Virginia this summer, police are mandated to enforce immigration rules. Several organizers and community leaders from across the nation also came out to support the local workers, and call for a national movement to end exploitation and harassment of immigrant workers.
