On Thursday, November 25, a group of advocates for the homeless began occupying a former homeless center at 75 I St, SW, Washington, DC. Both the Gales School Shelter and the Randall School Shelter have recently been closed seemingly as a part of the city administration's efforts to make the homeless invisible by sweeping them out of the downtown area.

I'm sure that there's a lot of folks out there who earn their living as journalists and by studying the political process who are way ahead of me on this, but I still feel compelled to ask: were the Democrats taking a dive in this last election? Yeah, I know I'm probably way wrong on this, but the question keeps nagging at me. |

Body parts litter Falluja and US dinner tables. Complacent Christians gorge themselves without fear, safe from the threat of gay marriage. Thus, the conquest continues. But resistance is persistent. Separation is both cause and consequence of our problems. Solidarity -- with the earth, other animals, each other, and ourselves -- will save us. |

Saturday almost a hundred immigrant day laborers and their supporters marched and rallied in Woodbridge Virginia, protesting recent police harassment and arrests of their community. Following the passage of the new bill HB 570 in Virginia this summer, police are mandated to enforce immigration rules. Several organizers and community leaders from across the nation also came out to support the local workers, and call for a national movement to end exploitation and harassment of immigrant workers.

Three day laborers were arrested on charges of “loitering” while peacefully seeking work adjacent to a church and 7-Eleven on the corner of Route 1 and Longview Drive. This arrest comes just weeks after the October 19th mass arrest of 25 day laborers in the same location. The workers arrested Monday face charges of “loitering” and have been transferred to INS custody for deportation. Transfer from county police to INS is permitted under new Virginia law HB 570, but is still illegal unless the individual has a previous history of deportation or felony conviction.

Would you believe… WE WON! Though it has largely been lost amidst the recent baseball stadium-related mania, on Tuesday, November 9th the DC Council actually voted on final amendments and passed the final version of the Omnibus Juvenile Justice Act of 2004.
* Eliminated from the final legislation are provisions that would have made it easier to transfer youth to the adult criminal justice system; penalize parents by suspending their driver’s licenses and fining them for delinquent behavior by their children; provide information to the housing authority that could have been used to evict families from public housing... |
