Philadelphians march and rally against Bush's wars
With a spirit of mourning at the thought of another 4 years of neo-con
rule, and a spirit of resistance against the war supported by the 2 major
parties' presidential candidates, a crowd gathered in Love Park at 4:30
pm, November 3d. MC'd by poets Martin Wiley and Jessica, the crowd shared
the mic, sharing speeches, songs, and poems of resistance. Following the
rally, a spontaneous march erupted into the streets of Philadelphia.
Winding past City Hall to Rittenhouse Square, the march grew to nearly
200. People upset with the re-election of Bush as well as those
against both Bush and Kerry's support for the US war in Iraq joined
in. Blocking traffic marching down Market Street, over Broad and up South
Street, the march drew mainly cheers and honks of support. They played
drums, whistles, an accordian, and guitar. A marcher said how empowering
this march felt, winding through the city and expressing the grief and anger
over the direction of the US. The march continued up past the Federal
Courthouse and jail and turned east. It turned towards the Benjamin
Franklin Bridge, blocking the lane heading towards New Jersey; halfway
across the bridge, Port Authority police informed demonstrators that the
bridge was private property and that they would be arrested if they
continued. The end of the march was trailed by police and also
a TV news cameraman, from ABC Action News Channel 6; police seized the
camera and arrested the cameraman. Legal observers were told he would be
taken to the main Camden police station, in New Jersey; he was
released later that night. The march ended around 8:30 pm in Love Park with promises to keep working together for peace and social
justice.

Philly Animal-Rights Activists Home Raided by FBI
At approximately 6 am, Thursday, October 28th 2004, the house
at 5018 Hazel Ave, Philadelphia, was served a warrant and
raided by about 16 agents from The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force.
The warrant was signed by United States Magistrate Arlander Keys of the
Northern District Justice of Illinois. The warrant was served by Special
Agent Jeremy Ashcroft of Illinois Terrorism Task Force and was directed
towards SHAC-USA and a the Prominent Philadelphia area animal rights
organization "Hugs For Puppies." After gaining entry to the home the
agents seized two computers, dozens of disks and software, cell phones of
the residents, various flyers, various books, spray paint, one sweat shirt
and miscellaneous items. Hugs for Puppies activists were also arrested at an animal-rights demonstration in June, 2004: see the 6/9/04 PhillyIMC feature for more information. Some of the activists affected will be speaking at the open-mic protest at Philadelphia's Love Park, on Wednesday, November 3, starting after 4:30 pm.

ELECTION 2004

As Tuesday nears, Philadelphians mobilize for all scenarios
On November 2nd, voters will cast ballots for the next President and Vice President, the US Senate, the US House, some state Senate seats, all state House seats, PA's attorney general, PA's auditor general, and the PA treasurer. Philadelphia residents will also consider a city bond initiative. At the same time, hundreds of volunteers from around the city and country will be working behind the scenes to get out every vote possible, and to make sure they count.
Get out the vote efforts have proliferated this election season, the combined result of changes in campaign law and a vigorous activist response to the unelection of 2000. Local efforts have been augmented by national organizations such as MoveOn.org that are focusing on Pennsylvania as one of the key swing states that could decide the presidency.
Much energy is being focused on getting information out to voters regarding the details of their right to vote. Groups like ACORN, the Vote for Homes! Coalition, and the Black Radical Congress are focusing especially on populations that might face barriers to voting due to social and ecnomic disenfranchisement. Local and national groups have set up legal response teams to facilitate a quick response to situations where a person's right to vote might be challenged at the poll.
At 7pm on Monday all these efforts will take a collective deep breath and converge at Rittenhouse Square for an election eve vigil initiated by the American Friends Service Committee.
Several protests are organized for the day after the election. Anticipating the possibility of a close race, the Kengington Welfare Rights Union has called for an 8am protest outside of the Federal Court Building and,
if necessary, "massive acts of civil disobedience" to defend the right of each person's vote to count before the election is called. On 4:30pm, anti-war activists will hold several "free speech gatherings" to express their dissatisfaction with both Bush and Kerry's military policies -- one at Vernon Park in Germantown, and one at Love Park in Center City. Finally, at 7pm, the Uhuru Solidarity Movement will host a conference on postelection strategy at the William Way Center.

Video exposes Bush regime incompetence in Iraq
John Kerry made a speech
in Philadelphia
on 25 October 2004 blaming President Bush for incompetence. The reason
was that the Iraqi weapons storage depot al Qaqaa, three miles by three
miles large, was looted of the high explosives HMX and RDX, used
in nuclear weapons to slam uranium together and thereby cause aa
critical mass. HMX and RDX are the most powerful explosives known
short of actual nuclear weapons. The al Qaqaa
facility had been known
of since 1991. The Iraqi
Ministry of Science and Technology claimed
on 10 October 2004 that it had lost 345 tons of very high explosives
"after 9 April 2003, through the theft and looting of the governmental
installations due to lack of security. KSTP, a Minneapolis/St.
Paul ABC affiliate, has film taken
of the al Qaqaa site. They filmed the doors having seals on
them. Disturbingly, KSTP reports that after American broke the seals to
inspect the bunkers, doors to the bunkers were left open and looters
then had free run of the
base. The Boston Globe confirms there was no
attempt to secure the facility against looters. Former arms
inspector David Kay stated both that the seals seen in the videos were
authentic and the powders
in the barrels were unequivocally HMX or RDX. It now
turns out that the Muthanna
site, containing chemical weapons, was also broken into and
looted.

Grassroots Cable Coalition Issues 'Code of Conduct' to Comcast
The Philadelphia Grassroots
Cable Coalition, a partnership of media, consumer, social and
economic justice groups, held a press conference on Wednesday, October
20, 2004 at the Clothespin in downtown Philly to issue its 'Code of Conduct'
to Comcast. The 'Code of Conduct' sites article 19 of the U.N. Universal Declaration of
Human Rights stating that the freedom of opinion and expression
are inaliable rights and that the current climate of consolidated
media ownership is a threat to those rights. PGCC calls on Comcast,
the worlds largest cable provider, to improve its record on consumer rights, workers rights, the lack of community access and representation, the lack of assurance of open
access through its broadband service, and the lack of recognition
of Comcast's obligations
to the communities it serves.

Five More War Resisters in Jail
Supporters rallied Tuesday in front of the Philadelphia Federal Courthouse as five more people went to jail for nonviolent resistance to the war in Iraq. The five are: Michael Brix (PP#58969-066), Marion Brown (PP#58973-066), Cassie Heino (PP#58971-066), Chris Haw (PP#58972-066), and, 90-year-old Quaker peacemaking legend Lillian Willoughby (PP#58970-066). Supporters can write them (making sure to include the prisoner number next to the prisoner's name on the envelope) at: Federal Detention Center - SHU, P.O. Box 562 (7th & Arch Sts.), Philadelphia, PA 19105.
The Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting of Friends is holding daily vigils of support for the war resisters. The vigil will conclude with a "Welcome Out" vigil on Tuesday October 26 at the Philadelphia Federal Courthouse, 601 Market Street.
These five were among the 107 people arrested on March 20, 2003 (the day after the US began its bombardment and invasion of Iraq) for blockading the Philadelphia Federal Building with their bodies. This protest was organized by the Brandywine Peace Community as part of the Iraq Pledge of Resistance. Since December 2003, those who have refused to pay the court-imposed fine have, in groups of five to ten, been taken to Federal Court and sentenced to seven days in the Philadelphia Federal Detention Center.

Indymedia Servers Reappear, But Questions Remain
Following the seizure of hard drives from two Indymedia webservers in the UK on Oct. 7th, the U.S. government mysteriously returned the hard drives on the 13th. The question still remains: who took them, and under what authority? All that is known at this point is that the subpoena that resulted in the seizure was issued at the request of a foreign government, most likely with the assistance of the U.S.
Attorney's Office in San Antonio. Reports suggest that the seizure order may stem from an Italian prosecutor, who made a generic request for information which the U.S. reportedly extended to a full seizure order without authorization. The Electronic Frontier Foundation says it will take legal action to find out what really happened to Indymedia's servers and "ensure that Internet media are protected from egregious First Amendment violations like this in the future."

Whistleblower Journalists Speak Out Against Fox News
Investigative reporters Jane Akre and Steve Wilson spoke out against
Fox News and corporate media consolidation on Thursday, Oct 14, 2004
at an event hosted by Media
Tank. Akre and Wilson were both fired from a Fox News affiliate
in Tampa when they refused to lie on behalf of the Monsanto Corp.
about the health effects of bovine
growth hormone in milk. Their resulting lawsuit, the first of its
kind under the Whistleblowers Act, made public record the depth to
which modern media conglomerates will go to bury the truth and
suppress those determined to provide it.

Sinclair Broadcast Group abuses authority
In a divisive and partisan
display of corporate muscle, the Sinclair Broadcast Group has
ordered their 62
affiliate stations (A quarter of all US stations) to air an
anti-Kerry film shortly before the election. The film was made in
six weeks by a
friend
and former aide to Pennsylvania's former Governor, Tom Ridge.
Sinclair is the group that snubbed
Nightline after its' showing
of American
casualties in the Iraq war and is deeply
connected to Bush. American Progress has more.
The Left Coaster has a number of
ideas on how to respond. DailyKos has a list of
major investors, Talking Points Memo has a running commentary on how
advertisers are responding and Media Matters has a list of
investors so concerned citizens can divest Sinclair from their
portfolios.
Note
to people calling & writing against Sinclair: Please,
please, please BE POLITE!! There are human beings on the other
ends of the lines you call and many of them agree with the
anti-Sinclair folks already. There have been a number of
complaints from people who have suffered over-enthusiastic
callers.

OPEN SOURCE AND INFORMATION REVOLUTION
|
oct 12 2004
|
Open Source comes of age
Military open source intelligence dates
back to 1988. Open source computer software goes back roughly
20 years. The basic idea
is that information needs to get to many places to be useful and the
further it spreads the better. The information explosion means
that one of the main information problems of today is that of
cataloging it all. This cataloging and classification problem
became so bad a few years ago that the 9-11 Commission (PDF files)
reports that the Director of Central Intelligence put out "The Plan" to
learn about and then take action against Bin Laden and al-Qa'ida, but
an official as highly placed as Deputy Secretary of State Richard
Armitage was not aware of the declaration that the US was "at war" with
al-Qa'ida (Section 2, p 243). The more information that's shared
publicly, the more the government can ensure that all those who need to
know, can know. The open-source software programs (The operating
system Linux, the database program
MySQL and the Internet browser Mozilla, among others) are written
with as many bugs and vulnerabilities as standard programs are.
EWeek reports
however, that Mozilla is attracting new customers away from Microsoft's
Internet Explorer because after six years in open-source development,
Mozilla is now more secure than IE is.
The future for open-source as a concept seems pretty bright.

FBI Seizes IMC Servers in the UK
Thursday morning, US authorities issued a federal order to Rackspace
ordering them to hand over Indymedia web servers to the requesting agency.
Rackspace, which provides hosting services for more that 20 Indymedia
sites at its London facility, complied and turned over the requested
servers, effectively removing those sites from the internet.
Since the subpoena was issued to Rackspace and not to Indymedia, the
reasons for this action are still unknown to Indymedia. Talking to
Indymedia volunteers, Rackspace stated that "they cannot provide Indymedia
with any information regarding the order." ISPs have received gag orders
in similar situations which prevent them from updating the concerned
parties on what is happening. It is unclear to Indymedia how and why a
server that is outside the US jurisdiction can be seized by US authorities.
At the same time an additional server was taken down at Rackspace which
provided streaming radio to several radio stations, BLAG (linux distro),
and a handful of miscellanous things.
The last few months have seen numerous attacks on independent media by the
US Federal Government. In August the Secret Service used a subpoena in an
attempt to disrupt the NYC IMC before the RNC by trying to get IP logs
from an ISP in the US and the Netherlands. Last month the FCC shut down
community radio stations around the US. Two weeks ago the FBI requested
that Indymedia takes down a post on the Nantes IMC that had a photo of
some undercover Swiss police and IMC volunteers in Seattle were visited by
the FBI on the same issue. On the other hand, Indymedia and other
independent media organisations were successfull with their victories, for
example against Diebold, and against the Patriot Act. Today however, the US
authorities shut down IMCs around the world. The list of affected local
media collectives includes Ambazonia, Uruguay, Andorra, Poland, Western
Massachusetts, Nice, Nantes, Lilles, Marseille (all France), Euskal Herria
(Basque Country), Liege, East and West Vlaanderen, Antwerpen (all
Belgium), Belgrade, Portugal, Prague, Galiza, Italy, Brazil, UK, part of
the Germany site, and the global Indymedia Radio site.

CBS NEWS VS THE BLOGS

The Killian Memos, Dan Rather and the blogs
Former Army National Guard officer Bill Burkett provided CBS News with
memos he claimed were
pulled from the trash in 1997 as National Guard officers were
sanitizing former Lt George W Bush's personnel record. Within
hours of CBS airing its report, a FreeRepublic
poster calling himself Buckhead
put out a piece questioning the typography used in the memos. Buckhead
turned out to be "Harry W. MacDougald, an Atlanta lawyer with
strong ties to conservative Republican causes".
Conservative
bloggers took up hs cause and raised a storm about, among other things,
how proportionally spaced fonts weren't used until the mid-1970s. This
claim was decisively squashed
by liberal bloggers, who conducted some research and found that
proportional fonts went back to 1941. But CBS News has since
discovered that they could
not vouch for the authenticity of the memos.
The
observations have been made that the wording of the memos was entirely
appropriate
for military evaluations and that President Bush has never provided the
American public with an explanation
for the time he missed while in the Texas Air National Guard. But
the fallout from"MemoGate" has meant that CBS News has now declared
that
they will not air a feature
critical of President Bush until after the election.

AUGUST 29TH PROTEST AS SEEN BY NEW YORKERS

How New Yorkers related to August 29th protesters
Interviews with protesters who stayed on for multiple days of protest
in New York City after the August 29th demonstration have confirmed the
observation made by a blogger that New York was far friendlier
to the protesters than it was to the Republican National Convention
delegates. A contributer to the PhillyNoRNC list serve named
Turms did a piece
describing how he went into New York identified as a Republican.
His reception was not a friendly one. People working for the
Communist Party report that their latest issue of Revolutionary Worker
had a
picture of President Bush on it's cover. This caused many New
Yorkers to turn away in disgust. When they were informed that it was an
anti-Bush paper,
they turned
around and requested a copy. A later poll
showed that two-thirds of NewYorkers did not think the convention was
worth holding. Convention delegates even had to worry about infiltrators
as delegates were handing out passes to protesters, who walked in and
created disruptions.

Remembering the Fallen in Philadelphia
On the third anniversary of 9/11, people around the world gathered to
remember those who have died. While most coverage
in the U.S. was
devoted to those who were killed in NYC, DC, and PA, many also
gathered to honor the victims outside the United States. In
Philadelphia, the American Friends Service Committee held a
vigil in
LOVE park to remember not only the just under 3,000 civilian deaths on
9/11/01, but also the 1,000 U.S. soldiers, 18,000 Iraqis, and
thousands of Afghanis who have also died as a result of the United
State's reaction to the tragedy.
